The fantastic world of the five senses

Polapola

The journey begins

A thought-gap into another world.

Michi thinks the forest is boring – until something suddenly tugs at his trouser leg. Polapola, a tiny fairy-like companion, takes him through the “Gedankenschlitz” into Polapolarium, a world of imagination.

There he meets Sluscha, Dalí, Pí, Cass, Ooo, Madame Fümee, Marcella and Mario Patata – and discovers how differently the world can sound, look, feel, smell and taste.

Colours are never just colours. Sounds hide in the leaves. Scents can awaken feelings.

The five senses

Every sense opens a different door.

The story does not explain perception like a textbook. It lets children discover, compare and wonder together with Polapola and Michi.

Seeing
01The five senses

Seeing

Dalí shows that green is never simply green, and black is never simply black. Colours change with light, weather and time of day, and every plant has its own shade.

With Dalí, colour becomes an adventure of its own.
Hearing
02The five senses

Hearing

Sluscha arranges the forest’s sounds like a great orchestra: wind, water, birds and animals all need their place without drowning one another out.

Listening closely means discovering the quiet sounds too.
Touching
03The five senses

Touching

Pí, Cass and Ooo shape bark, meadows, sand and stones. Smooth, rough, soft, prickly, warm or slippery – texture becomes part of the story.

Touch reveals differences that the eyes alone cannot see.
Smelling
04The five senses

Smelling

With Madame Fümee, Michi encounters lavender, rose and rosemary. Every scent has a character of its own and awakens different memories and feelings.

Scents are difficult to describe – and all the more vivid to experience.
Tasting
05The five senses

Tasting

Marcella and Mario Patata invite Michi into their cosy underground kitchen. There he discovers how carrots, celery, parsley and imagination can become something special.

Tasting together also means wondering and enjoying together.

The inhabitants

Quirky, lovable and unmistakable.

Every character has a role in Polapolarium – and each of them makes a different aspect of the five senses tangible.

Polapola

The tiny fairy-like companion ties the story together and guides Michi through Polapolarium.

Sluscha

Polapola’s mother is the forest fairy. Like a conductor, she gives rustling leaves, water, birds and animal voices their place.

Dalí

The forest’s colour composer makes sure that every plant, every light and every time of day receives its own precise shade.

Pí

He carves and shapes bark and pine cones until every surface feels exactly as it should.

Cass

He weaves lawns and meadows – sometimes soft as a carpet, sometimes high, prickly and full of thistles and nettles.

Ooo

He makes sand from stones, places smooth and rough pebbles and shapes the textures of the landscape.

Madame Fümee

The elegant mist figure introduces Michi to rose, lavender and rosemary and shows how differently scents can feel.

Marcella Patata

One of Polapolarium’s famous “Cuocis”. She cooks with imagination and a great love of flavour.

Mario Patata

Together with Marcella, he serves Michi surprising dishes and turns tasting into a shared experience.

When all of Polapolarium comes together.

The celebration

When all of Polapolarium comes together.

At the end, the forest inhabitants gather beneath lights and colourful ribbons. They sing, dance and eat together – a celebration where all five senses meet again.
